Staying inspired by thinking outside of the box
A simple Google search will result in over 12.9 million hits for this very theme, so it goes without saying that drawing inspiration from unlikely sources is not only possible, it's essential and common regardless of your profession. Being creative doesn't necessarily mean you're able to produce inspired work at the drop of the hat - if you can, I applaud you - because I think it's safe to say most creatives find the truth to be the exact opposite.
Whether you're a writer suffering writer's block, an illustrator unsure of what to put to paper, or a musician looking for a new tune, chances are you've stumbled into a desperate realm of un-inspiration.
Have no fear, it happens to the best of us. To get out of this slump, or to avoid it altogether, seek out inspiration from unlikely sources. Change your perspective metaphorically and physically, read up on a subject you don't typically think about, chat with a stranger - you never know where your next surge of creativity will be inspired from, but I assure you there are opportunities all around you!
Keeping eyes, heart, ears and mind open to learning
It's a simple fact that no one knows everything, even if they think they do. If somehow someone was able to possess the capacity for knowledge of all things, I'm sure there would still be room for growth. It's vital to always keep your senses and emotional receptors open and attentive to learning from other people or situations.
Sometimes talking with a friend on the opposite end of the political, artistic or education spectrum can reveal not only something about them, but something about yourself. There is a vast amount of technique, perspective and point of view out there in the world, and regardless of your agreement or discontent with them, there are always lessons to be learned.
In my attempts for spiritual discovery, I've come to learn that awakenings and revelations don't come to those who are actively seeking them. Rather, they tend to happen when the receptors are open, but sort of on autopilot. Not that you want to live your life on autopilot, but don't shut off or tune out these opportunities.
Seek out these lessons without subjectivity or expectation - they will help you grow as a person and professional!
Reaching out for advice, mentor-ship and friendship from professionals in your industry
From journalism professors to Sophia Amoruso's #GIRLBOSS guide, I've read and been told time and time again to simply reach out to professionals (or individuals to encompass qualities you hope to) in my desired industry.
The chance to "pick someone's brain" over a latte can be a life and career changing opportunity. This goes back to my previous point that no one knows everything - by connecting with individuals who have the experience or have walked a path you're attempting to journey down, you can gain invaluable knowledge and advice that you can to fuse into your professional life.
Whether you're unsure if you can make these connections via email, LinkdIn or just by cold calling - don't be afraid, simply ask! I've made connections with fashion bloggers who were unsure of where to start or where to rebrand, and it's been incredible to watch their growth.
You'll likely flatter these individuals by wanting to learn what they know, appreciating their skill and expertise enough to reach out, and best of all, you could gain a mentor and/or friend for life. Another plus, these are the people who can help when you're in a professional slump or when you need a solid reference for your dream job!
